The Software and Services group aims to ease researchers abilities to identify and obtain software through the University. Specifically, the group is responsible for:
- Identifying and reporting on the complete suite of software and services available to researchers on campus
- Identifying and developing a tool by which researchers can quickly determine whether or not a software product is available, whether or not an existing license can be shared with others, whether or not others might have interest in sharing the cost of a new license, and ultimately whether or not a particular piece of software must be purchased
- Creating a process by which researchers can identify others with similar software interests and needs
- Determining a process by which software can easily be distributed
- Influencing policies (such as Administrative Rights policies, Purchasing policies, and Risk Management policies) that are perceived to hinder the rapid identification, acquisition, installation, and adoption of software
- Identifying or adopting software code repositories to allow researchers engaged in software development to easily share their code with others and utilize code shared by others
